The Catalyst: On Its Feet and Hissing!

Despite the fact that this website hadn’t been updated since (*gasp*) December 2005, MUCH has happened here at The Catalyst. An overwhelming wave of support from our community and far beyond has nourished our souls and provided us with inspiration to live our dreams- this time with our hearts in tune with a deep dedication. Thank you everyone. We are honored to receive so much love and seek to return it as best we can.
We who have lived, breathed, sang and cried through the challenges of the past six months are still alive- and we aren’t going anywhere. Sometimes, to understand our true potential we must experience unbelievable pain and hardships. The Indigenous Six Nations (a confederacy of Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Turcarora peoples) in Canada are currently defending their land from settler corporate developers. They have grown, fiercely, like a field of fireweed engulfing the stumps of corporate gluttony. Many ancestors have suffered, both human and animal, due to disrespect of the Six Nations' peoples and the land. Yet the spirit of these people remains strong. We ALL can turn oppression into our power.
The Catalyst continues. A giant hole has been ripped into the fabric, but from every direction a community of creative hands is mending it back together.

    Keep our spirits wild!

    From Caterpillar to Butterfly 6/25/06

We are transmorphing our space! Anyone who saw The Catalyst prior to February 06’ must admit it was pretty cute for a bug. However, this spring, something changed- some force of nature (warmer weather?) propelled us into inward contemplation. Divine hands at work rearranged, renewed and removed the innards of this colorful insect. As the hot summer rays begin to heat up The Catalyst, we are opening our doors outward and upward. From caterpillar to butterfly our surface area has multiplied! We have more books, more meeting space, more community kitchen and soon to emmerge, a community computer lab (with internet access). Stop by and check out our pretty wings.

Statement from Friends of the Catalyst:

    December 22, 2005

We mourn the passing of our dear friend and community member, Bill Rodgers, who worked tirelessly for the causes of social justice and environmental sustainability. We ask that he be remembered as the gentle, kind, and compassionate person we all knew and loved here in Prescott. We remain committed to continuing the work of community building and ecological awareness, through the Catalyst Infoshop, as part of the legacy Bill helped to create. We wish our friend the peace and serenity that he strived so hard to create in this world. This is a great loss for our community. We love you, Bill.

Prescott Community Supports the Catalyst Infoshop and William Rodgers

Catalyst Infoshop and Bookstore Remains Open

Prescott, AZ — The small community of Prescott, Arizona is devastated by the arrest of William Rodgers, co-proprietor of the Catalyst Infoshop and Bookstore, located in the McCormick Arts District. Rodgers is facing an upcoming hearing Friday, December 16 in Flagstaff at 10am at the Federal Magistrate Court.

“Bill is innocent until proven guilty. There is much more for our community to learn regarding these allegations. We do know that Bill is an important part of our community and we plan to support him,” said Liam O’Neill, Prescott resident and Catalyst volunteer.

“Bill is a kind and compassionate partner. He is one of the gentlest people I have known. I am proud of the work that we have done together through the Catalyst Infoshop and Bookstore and in the Prescott community,” said Kathleen Nelson, partner to Rodgers, at the bookstore.

The Catalyst Infoshop and Bookstore plays an important role within the McCormick Arts District. The District hosts family and arts oriented events for the Prescott community.

“Bill is a loving person with great integrity. He and Katie have put their heart and soul into the Catalyst and the McCormick Arts District,” said neighbor, Rachel Houseman, owner of Eye on the Mountain Art Gallery.

The Catalyst Infoshop and Bookstore has operated in Prescott, Arizona since 2003. The establishment hosts a variety of community events including a High School Girls Club, Knitting Circle, Philosophy Discussion Group, Prescott Free School, Sustainable Communities Group, and has served as a popular non-alcoholic performance venue.

Despite recent events The Friends of the Catalyst Infoshop is committed to furthering the mission of this valuable community resource, which is to ”facilitate a greater sense of community among concerned citizens in Prescott and raise awareness of local and regional issues.”

More than a dozen Federal Agents spent over seven hours searching the Catalyst Infoshop and Bookstore.

“It is troubling to see legislation like the Patriot Act applied to places such as libraries and bookstores. The implications of this could extend far beyond places like the Catalyst. The free-flow of information and ideas must be protected in these uncertain times,” said Randall Amster, Professor of Peace Studies at Prescott College.

The Catalyst is open from 12 p.m.-8 p.m. The volunteer staff is helpful and knowledgeable about important community resources. If you are interested in supporting the Catalyst contact us at info@catalystinfoshop.org.
